|Description: ||The National Security Language Initiative for Youth NSLI-Y program, sponsored by the US Department of State, provides merit-based scholarships for high school students to study less commonly taught languages in countries where they are spoken. Applicants choose a language (Russian, Arabic, Turkish, Mandarin, Korean, Persian or Hindi) and a duration (either six weeks during the summer or an entire school year). You don't need to know any of the language to apply!|
Students attend language class each day and go on cultural excursions over the weekends They sometimes stay in dorms but more often live with host families. These families speak the target language and provide the participants with a home away from home.
The State Department covers all costs-flights, †housing, food, classes, and excursions-and covers a stipend for personal expenses. Applications are due October 18.
